Since April 2022, England and Wales have used a no-fault divorce process. You no longer have to prove anyone is to blame. The cheapest route is usually an online divorce service or a fixed-fee solicitor, with court fees of £593 paid separately to HMCTS.

Common questions

How much does a divorce cost in the UK?
The mandatory court fee is £593 paid to HMCTS. On top of that, an online divorce service typically charges £150 to £400, while a high-street solicitor charges £500 to £1,500 for a straightforward uncontested divorce. Contested divorces or complex finances can cost several thousand pounds.
How long does a no-fault divorce take?
The minimum is 26 weeks (six months) from the date your application is issued. There is a 20-week reflection period before you can apply for a conditional order, then a further 6 weeks before the final order can be made.
Do I need a solicitor to get divorced?
No. You can apply for a divorce yourself directly through GOV.UK, or use a low-cost online divorce service. A solicitor is recommended if you have significant assets, pensions, a business, or if your ex contests the divorce or finances.
What is a consent order?
A consent order is a legally binding court order that locks in your financial agreement after divorce. Without one, your ex can come back years later and make a financial claim against you. Most solicitors strongly recommend getting one.
