Divorce and Separation
Since April 2022, England and Wales have used a no-fault divorce process. You no longer have to prove anyone is to blame. The cheapest route is usually an online divorce service or a fixed-fee solicitor, with court fees of £593 paid separately to HMCTS.
Child Arrangements and Custody
When parents separate, the law focuses on what is best for the child. Most disagreements are resolved through mediation, but where that fails you can apply to the family court for a Child Arrangements Order setting out where the child lives and how they spend time with each parent.
Financial Settlements and Consent Orders
Sorting out money when you divorce is a separate process from the divorce itself. A financial settlement, ideally captured in a sealed Consent Order, gives you certainty and protects both sides from future claims.
Domestic Abuse and Protective Orders
If you are in immediate danger, call 999. If you cannot speak, press 55 when prompted. The information below covers the legal protections available in England and Wales and how to access free or low-cost legal help quickly.
Find a Family Law Solicitor
All UK solicitors are regulated, but choosing the right one matters. Look for membership of Resolution (a code of constructive practice), specialism in family law, and clear fixed-fee or capped pricing where possible.
How we choose providers
Every provider on this site is either regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA), an established mediation body, or a recognised UK charity. We do not list unregulated lead-generation services or anyone whose pricing or terms are unclear.
- SRA registration verified for all law firms
- Resolution membership preferred where applicable
- Transparent fixed-fee or capped pricing
- Free options listed alongside paid services
- Affiliate links clearly labelled as Sponsored
- We disclose all commercial relationships up front
